The firm was founded in the nineteenth century shortly after a Royal Charter was granted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in 1880.

Frederick William Smith, who practised at 76 Cheapside, was admitted as a Fellow of the Institute in 1881 and in 1896 was joined by Frederick John Riches in a practice called “Fred. W. Smith & Co.” In 1913 the practice was renamed “F. W. Smith, Riches & Co.”

The current partners, Martin Rooney (senior partner), Daniel Crawford and Tony Jackson, together with the management team, continue to provide the quality of service and advice that earned the practice its reputation for building and maintaining long-term business relationships.
